In 1977, under the leadership of Pastor Lavern Hanson, Trinity made the decision to proceed with plans to have its own radio station. According to Pastor Hanson at the time, “This can prove to be one of the most effective tools for outreach in our community and throughout North Iowa . . . As far as we know, we are the only congregation in the American Lutheran Church which will have its own Radio Station.” KCMR radio went on the air on May 3, 1979, at 93.3 on the FM dial.
In 1988, at the annual meeting in January, the separation of radio station KCMR from Trinity Lutheran congregation was recognized and ratified. However, Trinity continues to have close ties with KCMR.
The by-laws of the TLC Broadcasting Corporation call for 75% of the Board of Directors to be members of Trinity Lutheran Church. About 25% of all volunteers are from this congregation. Until October of 1992, KCMR studios were located in the church building.
Each Sunday, Trinity’s 9:30 a.m. worship service is broadcast live on KCMR 97.9 FM radio. Other festival services, mid-week services during Lent and Advent, as well as special events such as Brown Bag Bach concerts, are also broadcast live. Trinity’s radio ministry is an excellent outreach to those in care facilities, homebound members, as well as others throughout Mason City and the North Iowa area. Trinity members give monetary support to KCMR, as well as volunteer hours.
