Holy Moments

When have you experienced a holy moment? Sometimes we define holy moments as experiences where we clearly sensed the presence of God. Maybe that was in worship or a spiritual retreat or summer camp? These are holy moments. But they aren’t the only holy moments. What if moments were holy because God was present in them (whether we recognized God or not)? What if moments were holy because, freed by God’s grace, we were able to serve a neighbor? Or ask for forgiveness when we did wrong?

In the book, Being Family, author Scott Keith reflects on Christian vocation. He writes, “Your daily grind isn’t a distraction from the Christian life. It is the Christian life. It’s messy, it’s hidden, it’s unremarkable in the eyes of the world, but it’s holy. Because God is there, hidden in the mundane, loving His world through you. And that’s the scandal and beauty of vocation. You don’t have to chase a divine calling to find God. God’s already at your kitchen table. God’s in your minivan. God’s behind your desk at work. God is present in the very people who need you. That’s where Christian vocation is lived, not above the clouds, but on the ground.”

Cleaning up after your toddler after they get sick in the car doesn’t feel like a holy moment. But it is. Telling your child you are sorry for raising your voice when your patience ran out doesn’t feel like a holy moment. But it is. Why? Because God is present, and in these moments we live out our callings to serve those placed in our lives. So here’s your challenge for the week. Before you go to sleep this week, write down three holy moments from your day. It is in recognizing the nearness of God, we begin to see how God might be calling us to respond to the gift of God’s love and grace.

What if one day’s worth of holy moments in the lives of the Trinity community could be written down? There is a story I would like to read!
