Life in the first century Roman Empire was a struggle for many people. Jesus knows a thing or two about God’s delight in providing sustenance—food given “without price,” as Isaiah 55:1 puts it. He also knows about enlisting others in the toil and joy of offering food to people who are hungry. That it is God’s will that hungry people be fed is not new with Jesus, but he embodies God’s desire to nourish us when he multiplies the loaves and fishes to feed more than 5000 people.
